Traveling to the UK in 2025?

Here's what you need to know about the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme

As part of the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, visitors to the UK may be required to apply for permission to enter the country, prior to traveling. From January 8, 2025 this will apply to US and Canadian citizens, along with certain other foreign travelers. If you are planning travel to the UK, here’s what you need to know about the application process:

Do I need to apply for an ETA?

Non-European citizens, including, but not limited to, Americans, Canadians and Australians, will need to apply for an ETA before traveling to the UK on or after January 8, 2025. This includes travelers transiting through airports within the UK, even if they are not leaving the airport.

Some Middle-Eastern nationalities already require an ETA for travel to the UK and European nationals who are not UK citizens will also require an ETA for travel from April 2, 2025. To confirm ETA requirements for various nationalities, click here.

When should I apply?

Travelers requiring ETAs can now apply online. Applications may take up to 72 hours to be processed so it’s recommended that travelers apply at least a few days prior to their departure date. Travelers without an ETA at the time of their travel to the UK risk receiving a fine or even being denied boarding.

How do I apply?

You can apply for an ETA online through the UK ETA mobile app (recommended if applying for yourself) or website (required if applying on behalf of someone else who is not present). You will need to have a number of things available in order to complete the application process including:

-your email address
-your current passport
-a valid credit or debit card to pay the application fee
-if you are unable to take a photo using your device, you will also need a recent digital headshot

How much does it cost?

An ETA costs £10 (approximately US$ 13 or CA$ 18) and payments are made online by credit or debit card at the time of the application.

Do I need to apply for an ETA each time I travel to the UK?

Once you are granted an ETA it is valid for two years and allows multiple trips to the UK. Since the ETA is linked to your passport, you will need to reapply if you renew your passport, even if your ETA is still valid.
